A difficult area of mathematics has always been the understanding of fractions.
This however, has not stopped Year 3 from tackling it head on. The children discussed their previous understanding of fractions and created an ‘anchor chart’ to help them with their learning.
The children began by practically exploring fractions of a shape by cutting cake into equal parts. They then moved on to identifying fractions of objects by using multilink cubes to show fractions.
Later in the week, the children used a bar model to calculate a fraction of a number.
The children have also been discussing equivalent fractions and have been using cuisenares in maths workshop to investigate equivalent fractions.
Next, Year 3 are preparing to add and subtract fractions!
