Year 3 have enjoyed lots of practical Maths over the last two weeks. They have been exploring fractions of shapes, focusing initially on unit fractions. The children started their work on fractions by folding paper into equal sized parts to create halves, thirds and quarters. They then went on to look at recognising half and quarter of a shape. Using the Cuisenaire rods was really helpful in exploring halves and quarters too.
Over the last few days, the children have gone on to look at different unit fractions including sixths and eighths. They looked at different ways of showing these fractions using multilink and big building blocks outside.
We have really enjoyed our first look at fractions in Year 3 and can’t wait to look now at non-unit fractions and fractions of a number. Well done Year 3!
