This week in Year 3, we have begun looking at fractions. We have used the Cuisenaire Rods to help us with our understanding of equal parts.
We explored using the coloured rods but allocated different amounts to them. To start, decided to call the red rod 1. We then had to work out what the other rods would be worth.
We realised that two white cubes could fit into 1 red rod so that rod must be worth 1/2. We also found out the 2/2 is the same as 1 whole. We kept investigating with different coloured rods to work out their value if red was worth 1.
Next, the children worked in groups to see what they could find out about the rods if the purple rod was worth 1. We had a great time exploring and understanding equal parts.
