Fun With Fractions

Year 2 have started looking at fractions this half term. We have used apples and jam tarts to identify halves and quarters, followed by our brilliant knowledge of bar models to find parts of a number. The children have worked really hard on recognising and finding halves, quarters and thirds.

Firstly we used our knowledge of equal groups to understand that fractions need to be equal. By using bar models to split the whole into equal parts, the children were able to identify one quarter, one half and one third.

Practical methods have supported the children in their understanding so that they can apply this to their work sheets. We have seen some fantastic explanations to reasoning questions within their work. The Year 2 adults are very proud of how well the children are using their mathematical thinking!
