Having an ‘ice’ time!

The recent cold weather has given preschool children the opportunity to explore ice. We have been exploring materials, naming them and describing how they feel. The ice was a great chance to think about how some materials change.

The children explored the ice and the conversation started with how cold it felt! The children used lots of words to describe this including cold, freezing and icy. They were determined to break the ice and used anything they could find to do this! We then started to notice how the ice was changing.

The children saw there was water in the tray and we wondered what was happening: ‘It’s melting’ ‘The sun is melting it’. After a while of breaking the ice, the children then used water paints to mark make with the ice! They painted on the ice blocks and used the water to paint on the tray. Who knew there were so many learning opportunities with ice!
